Anthony Asuquo, the head coach of Tony International Gymnastics club (TIG) has called on the Nigerian government through the Federal Ministry of Sports, to support gymnastics to achieve success at the Olympic Games.

In an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Tuesday , Asuquo emphasised on the club’s commitment to developing top-tier athletes capable of representing Nigeria at the Olympics.

“We have athletes who can win Olympic medals for Nigeria. Some of our gymnasts should be competing at the Youth Olympics, but funding is a challenge.

“We have problem of facilities. We have very poor equipment at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium, Abuja but the gymnasts are just trying their best to do their routine on the equipment.

“Even at the just concluded National Youth Games (NYG) in Asaba, some of our gymnasts had ankle and knee injuries but had to endure to win medals for their various states.

“ Although TIG won 13 out of the 16 medals on offer at the games, it was not a pleasant experience for us.

“We are calling on the government, stakeholders and individuals to support gymnastics as much as they do to other sports,’’ Asuquo noted.

NAN reports that Nigeria made a debut in the sport at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics with Uche Eke as the sole representative. (NAN)
