The President of Commonwealth Games Nigeria, Habu Gumel, has called on all relevant stakeholders to join the fight against drug use and abuse, especially among the youth.
Gumel made the call in his speech at a programme to commemorate the 2025 Commonwealth Day, on Tuesday ,in Lagos.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Commonwealth Day ,which seeks to uphold the fundamental values of the Commonwealth by promoting unity, equity and youth empowerment, observed in March every year.
The theme of the 2025 Day is: “Drug Use and Abuse: A Serious Issue Affecting Communities”
The programme was attended by students from four schools in Amuwo-Odofin area of the state.
Gumel noted that drug use and abuse could destroy the youth and communities, if the society does not take steps to address the issue.
According to him, consumption of drugs and substance abuse now pose a big problem in the society, threatening lives .
“This is one fight that all parents, teachers and government and other stakeholders should join hands to fight.
“Unless addressed head-on, our communities should be ready to face the dire consequences.
“The purpose of this effort(programme) is to provide an avenue for social interaction among the youths by encouraging healthy communication and collaboration ” he said.
Also speaking at the programme, a medical officer, Dr. Olubukola Bojuwoye,counselled the youth on proper use of drugs.
He highlighted the inherent dangers of drug addiction and abuse.
“Using drugs can make or mar you, but the ultimate choice is yours.”
The one-day event was coordinated by The Nigeria Olympic Committee(NOC) Assistant-Secretary in charge of Commonwealth Games Affairs, Austin Odigie. (NAN)
