The Cope and Live Mental Health Awareness Foundation, an NGO, has offered free mental counseling and therapy services to 105 Nigerians to enhance their mental well being.
The Co-founder of the Foundation, Mrs Uzoamaka Nwachukwu, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday in Enugu that the free mental counseling and therapy services lasted for a month.
Nwachukwu, who is a Psychologist, said that the category of those who accessed the free mental services in the month of August included the elderly, retired persons, Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) and women going through pregnancy depression among others.
She noted that the counseling sessions were done physically in the foundation’s resource centres across the country and some virtually.
According to her, most of the therapy sessions were administered physically in the foundation’s resource centres scattered within the country.
She said:“During the exercise, majority of those we counseled and followed up were diagnosed with depression, anxiety and dementia.
“Some of those with depression were already crossing the red line of suicidal thoughts before we interfaced with them.
“Some have started following the negative coping strategy of alcoholism and drug abuse as well as joining organised criminal groups, before we started resuscitating them through series of positive engagements and activities.”
Nwachukwu noted that there were interesting cases of anxiety and worries about tomorrow by some elderly and retired persons who came for the free counseling.
“We keep telling them that tomorrow will take care of itself.
“Only God Almighty owns and knows clearly about tomorrow. As mortals, we only have and know about today,” she added. (NAN)
