Gov Abdullahi Sule of Nasarawa State has inaugurated Dr Kassim Muhammad as the Chairman of Nasarawa State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) and Mr Mustapha Aliyu as Chairman of Local Government Service Commission.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN ) reports that the governor also inaugurated three members for the SUBEB and two other members for the Local Government Service Commission.
Sule, while performing the inauguration on Wednesday in Lafia, said his administration remained resolute in the provision of quality education for the children to nurture them to become future leaders.
He maintained that basic education was a foundation for a prosperous society, hence the need to sustain the state’s modest effort toward repositioning primary and junior secondary schools to enhance quality service delivery.
The governor urged the new management of the boards to consolidate on the giant achievements recorded by their predecessors for the benefit of the elementary education component and effective service delivery at the grassroots.
“Today’s event is, therefore, significant as it involves a few important institutions that are essential in our pursuit of socio-economic development.
“Firstly, our commitment is to build a solid foundation for our educational sector, and secondly, to ensure that the third tier of government is placed on the right pedestal for effective service delivery at the grassroots.
“As you may be aware, since our assumption of office in May 2019, we have continued to accord high premium to the education sector, particularly the basic component,” he said.
The governor said that his administration was poised to recruit additional staff for primary schools in the state.
“We believe that, through massive investments in the education sector, the state will produce the required manpower and expertise that is needed for dynamic and proactive public and Private education sectors.
“It is for this reason that we continue to commit substantial resources in the payment of counterpart funds to facilitate the provision of additional school infrastructure and instructional materials essential for the creation of a desirable environment for effective teaching and learning,” he said.
Sule enjoined the local government service commission to ensure the realisation of improving the socio-economic development of people in the rural areas through functional local government system.
“It is part of our resolve to reposition the local government council with the full autonomy granted to the local government by the constitution,” he added.
The governor noted with dissatisfaction that some local government workers had relocated to city centres but only go to collect their monthly salaries since they have their names in the payment voucher.
“These category of workers are not adding any value to the system. This attitude must stop if we want to make progress,” he said.
Reponding on behalf of the appointees, Chairman of the Local Government Service Commission, Aliyu, thanked the government for the opportunity to serve the state.
He assured the governor and the people of the state of their commitment to justify the confidence reposed in them.(NAN)
