German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul has criticised Israel’s actions in the Gaza Strip, stating that Germany will not yield to political pressure or be forced into automatic solidarity.
Speaking in Berlin, Wadephul condemned the denial of essential supplies such as food and medicine to Gaza’s civilian population, calling it “completely unacceptable.”
His remarks followed those of German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, who a day earlier escalated his criticism of Israel’s military campaign.
At the same forum on Monday, Merz said he “no longer understands” the purpose of Israel’s ongoing military operations in the region.
Building on Merz’s comments, Wadephul said the Israeli army’s actions had exceeded the bounds of proportionality in its fight against Hamas.
While reaffirming Germany’s firm stance against antisemitism, Wadephul warned that this position must not lead to the country being instrumentalised in the Gaza conflict.
When asked whether Germany would continue supplying arms to Israel, Wadephul stated that Berlin would act in line with international humanitarian law.
“Wherever there is a risk of international humanitarian law being violated,” he said, “we will certainly not supply weapons.(Xinhua/NAN)
