German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier had expressed scepticism about U.S. President Donald Trump’s plans to resettle Palestinians living in the Gaza Strip.
“I only hear concerns here in the region,’’ he said at a meeting with Jordan’s King Abdullah II in Amman on Wednesday during a visit to Jordan.
Steinmeier said he was trying to choose his words very carefully, and made it clear that the region needed a sustainable solution.
Steinmeier had already held political talks in Saudi Arabia before his visit to Jordan.
The German president said that he had observed that there was now an expectation that work is being done not only on stability for Israel and the Palestinians, but for the entire region.
“We need a completely new approach,’’ he said.
Following the meeting in Amman, Steinmeier flew to the Turkish capital of Ankara to meet Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.
As in Amman, central topics in the meeting are expected to be the future of Syria after the fall of long-time ruler Bashar al-Assad, as well as further developments in Gaza after the ceasefire deal between Israel and the Palestinian militant group Hamas. (dpa/NAN)
