With about a month to go until Germany’s general election, the conservative CDU/CSU bloc has seen its lead shrink, according to a new poll released on Wednesday.

The YouGov poll showed that the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and its Bavarian sister party, the Christian Social Union (CSU), dropped 2 percentage points compared to the previous week.

The bloc now stood at 28 per cent.

Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s centre-left Social Democrats (SPD) gained 1 percentage point and now tied with the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) at 19 per cent, after the AfD dropped 2 percentage points.

The Greens also saw an increase, rising by 1 percentage point to 15 per cent, their highest level of support since April 2024, according to the YouGov poll.

Among the smaller parties, the populist Sahra Wagenknecht Alliance (BSW) remained steady at 6 per cent, while both the pro-business Free Democrats (FDP).

The Left party was below the 5 per cent threshold needed to secure seats in the Bundestag, or lower house of parliament, that stood at 4 per cent.

Germany would go to polls in early elections on Feb. 23.

For the survey, YouGov reached out to 2,194 people between Jan. 17 to 20, with a total of 1,858 people answering questions about their voting intentions.

The survey also revealed that nearly one third of voters remained undecided.

Also among those surveyed, 79 per cent said no party fully represents them, 75 per cent are waiting for further developments, and 70 per cent feel insufficiently informed. (dpa/NAN)
