Political leaders and community figures from Lafia Local Government Area in central Nigeria have called on former Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, to enter the race for Nasarawa State’s governorship in 2027.
The endorsement came during a high-profile stakeholders’ meeting held in Lafia on Monday, where prominent voices hailed Adamu’s track record in public service as a foundation for transformative state leadership.
Professor Mohammed Mainoma, former Vice Chancellor of Nasarawa State University, Keffi, who chaired the gathering, described Adamu as a “distinguished administrator” with both national and international credentials.
“He has served with honour at Interpol for over a decade and as Nigeria’s police chief,” Mainoma said. “We believe he can replicate his achievements to secure peace, drive development, and elevate Nasarawa to new heights.”
Adamu’s reputation for integrity, leadership, and global experience was repeatedly highlighted as a key reason for the collective call to contest. Mainoma and other speakers stressed that Nasarawa must capitalise on Adamu’s international connections to fast-track growth.
Barrister Musa Hussaini, a close associate of Adamu, underscored the unprecedented unity behind the endorsement. “Since the return to civilian rule in 1999, this is the first time Lafia’s stakeholders have unanimously rallied behind a single candidate,” he noted. “There’s no division—only one voice calling for a leader who stands head and shoulders above the rest.”
He urged supporters to engage actively in the democratic process by registering with the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), which would serve as the platform for Adamu’s potential candidacy.
Thirty individuals have reportedly expressed interest in contesting the governorship in 2027, but Hussaini said Adamu’s leadership credentials set him apart.
Also speaking at the event, Federal House of Representatives member Abubakar Sarki-Dahiru described Adamu as a “peace-loving, accommodating leader” and encouraged him to accept the call of his people.
In response, Adamu expressed humility and appreciation for the support, noting that while he had not initially planned to run, he would not ignore the will of the people. “I have dedicated my life to public service, and I will begin consultations across Nasarawa to explore this path,” he said.
