The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Warri Correspondents Chapel has urged the Delta Government to evacuate residents of flood-prone areas to safer locations.
The resolution was reached at the chapel’s montly congress on Wednesday in Warri.
The resolution followed alert by relevant government agencies on imminent flood disaster in some states across the country.
The chapel led by its Chairman, Mr Victor Okpomor, urged residents in the flood-prone communities to heed to government’s advice to be evacuated.
“The resolution is inline with the warning by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMET), that at least 20 states, including Delta will experience severe flooding.
“We call on the Delta government to expedite action towards evacuating residents living in flood-prone areas in the state to avoid serious impact and loss of lives.
“We also call on residents of the communities on the bank of River Niger to be more vigilant and be ready to be evacuated,” the congress resolved,” the group said.
On rising cases of crime in the state, it urged the government and the security agencies to urgently address the situation.
It further urged the government to establish agricultural settlements in the three senatorial districts of the state.
It advised the Local Government Areas in the state to cue into the massive food production arrangement.
The union expressed concerns over the lack of teachers in some public secondary schools in the state, and urged government to urgently tackle the situation.
It expressed worries over the poor transportation system in the state and appealed to the government to design a workable mass transport system.
The union commended the state government for the ongoing road projects across the state, particularly the flyover projects at Enerhen Junction, PTI Junction and DSC Roundabout.
It urged the state government to rehabilitate the link roads around the ongoing construction sites to ameliorate the pains of drivers and commuters. (NAN)
