The Federal Executive Council (FEC) has expressed profound sorrow over the death of former President Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away on Sunday, 13 July, in the United Kingdom.
In a statement issued on behalf of the council by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, and signed by Segun Imohiosen, Director of Information and Public Relations, Office of the SGF, Buhari was remembered as a patriot, statesman and disciplined leader who served Nigeria with honour and integrity.
Akume highlighted Buhari’s enduring legacy, which spanned his tenure as military Head of State from 1984 to 1985 and later as a democratically elected President from 2015 to 2023. He commended Buhari’s resolute fight against corruption, steadfast commitment to national unity, and unwavering dedication to public service.
“He led with calm strength, moral clarity and unmatched devotion to the Nigerian project. His vision for a better, safer and more transparent Nigeria inspired millions across the country and beyond,” the statement read.
In honour of the late leader, President Bola Tinubu has directed that national flags be flown at half-mast across Nigeria for seven days, starting Sunday, 13 July.
Additionally, the President has convened an emergency Federal Executive Council meeting on Tuesday to pay tribute to Buhari and reflect on his years of service to the nation.
On behalf of all FEC members, Akume extended heartfelt condolences to Mrs Aisha Buhari, the entire Buhari family, as well as to the government and people of Katsina State.
The statement concluded with prayers for Allah to grant the late president Al-Jannah Firdaus.
