Nigeria’s Federal Executive Council (FEC) will convene a special session on Thursday, 17 July, to honour the late former President Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away on 13 July in London.
The tribute meeting, scheduled for 1:00 p.m. at the Council Chambers of the Presidential Villa in Abuja, will be presided over by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
The solemn gathering is expected to bring together cabinet members, senior government officials, and close associates of the late leader, offering them an opportunity to reflect on Buhari’s legacy and decades-long service to Nigeria, both as a military ruler and as an elected President.
President Tinubu will deliver a formal eulogy in memory of his predecessor, highlighting Buhari’s role in shaping Nigeria’s political evolution, democratic consolidation, and commitment to national integrity.
Other key officials in the current administration, including ministers and aides, will also share short tributes, offering personal and professional insights into Buhari’s impact on governance and public service.
The commemorative session forms part of a broader series of national mourning events organised by the Federal Government.
Muhammadu Buhari served as Nigeria’s Head of State from 1984 to 1985, following a military coup, and returned as a democratically elected President from 2015 to 2023. He was buried in his hometown of Daura, Katsina State, in accordance with Islamic traditions.
