The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Muslim Pilgrims Welfare Board has expressed deep appreciation to FCT Minister Nyesom Wike for his instrumental role in facilitating a smooth and successful 2025 Hajj operation, despite not being of the Islamic faith.
Speaking to reporters in Makkah on Monday, the Director of the Board, Malam Kadiri Edah, noted that both Minister Wike and the FCT Minister of State, Dr Mariya Bunkure, granted essential approvals and demonstrated unwavering commitment to ensuring the welfare of pilgrims throughout the Hajj season.
“FCT pilgrims experienced no shortages or difficulties,” Edah said. “Minister Wike allowed the board to operate without undue interference while providing all the necessary support. His contribution has been exceptional.”
He credited the administration’s backing for the seamless execution of key stages in the pilgrimage preparation, including medical screenings, educational seminars, and orientation on religious rites and Saudi laws.
Edah also praised the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON) for improvements in logistics and welfare provision. He highlighted that air travel arrangements were significantly upgraded, allowing for larger aircraft and more efficient transportation.
“The tents were more spacious, the meals more satisfactory, and the health services were prompt and effective,” he said.
However, he acknowledged visa-related issues, explaining that only 1,500 of the 1,531 registered FCT pilgrims received visas, as the Saudi authorities had closed processing before the final batch could be accommodated.
In terms of accommodation and catering, Edah said the board ensured lodgings within walking distance of the Masjid al-Haram and provided high-quality Nigerian meals, earning positive feedback from pilgrims.
He recounted how the board swiftly responded to a health emergency involving a staff member who collapsed on Arafat Day. “Thankfully, due to the quick intervention of medical staff and available ambulance services, he recovered fully,” Edah added.
