The 11th edition of the All African University Games (FASU)came to conclusion on Sunday at the Lagos State University, Ojo (LASU).
No fewer than 42 universities across Africa with 21 universities coming from Nigeria competed for honours at the games.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the competition was jointly hosted by LASU and the University of Lagos, Akoka .
After nine days of competition ,the closing ceremony began with a farewell parade by the contingents and the officials.
The Vice -Chancellors of UNILAG and LASU gave their farewell speeches, thanking the Local Organising Committee, the participants for a successful event.
They also thanked FASU for giving the two institutions the opportunity to host the rest of Africa through the competitive event that brought the best out of the competing institutions.
Meanwhile, the Director of Sports, LASU and member of Local Organising Committee for FASU, Segun Olawunmi, said that the event was a huge success.
He said that the competition was a celebration of universities’ excellence in sport and that participants conducted themselves well.
Olawunmi also said that the event, like every other competition,provided a good platform for the youths to showcase their potential towards securing alternative career through sports.
“The students showcased their very best where spirit of camaraderie and great sportsmanship was displayed throughout the duration of the competition.
“We started preparing for the competition two years ago, and we were able to put together the facilities and state -of -the- art media coverage.
“We had the support from several corporate organisations and most importantly, the executive Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu.
“We also had for the first time in the history of the FASU Games the use of Video Assistant Referee (VAR) in the football event,”Olawunmi said.
NAN reports that at the end of the competitive event, the American University in Cairo, Egypt came first with 46 gold medals, 28 silver and eight bronze medals.
The host school ,LASU ,came second with 28 gold medals, 30 silver and 26 bronze medals ,while UNILAG came third with 25 gold medals, 23 silver and 22 bronze medals.
