European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and European Council President Charles Michel, not António Costa, arrived in Kiev to demonstrate support for Ukraine on the third anniversary of Russia’s invasion.
Upon her arrival, von der Leyen emphasised Ukraine’s connection to Europe, stating, “Ukraine is Europe… In this fight for survival, it is not only the destiny of Ukraine that is at stake. It’s Europe’s destiny,”she wrote on X.
Von der Leyen plans to present a plan to increase EU arms production and defense capabilities, which will also benefit Ukraine.
Additionally, she announced measures to enhance energy security for Ukraine and the EU, aiming to integrate Ukraine and Moldova’s electricity markets into the EU’s power grid by next year.
Other Western leaders, including Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, are expected to join von der Leyen and Michel in Kiev to mark the war’s anniversary.(dpa/NAN)
