The Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, has called for peace and patience among residents of Rimin Zakara following recent unrest over a land dispute with Bayero University Kano (BUK).
Sanusi made this appeal on Tuesday during a sympathy visit to the community after returning from Lesser Hajj. The Kano state government confirmed on Monday that three individuals were killed during clashes between a demolition team and the Rimin Zakara community in the Ungogo Local Government Area.
Ibrahim Wayya, the Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, announced that a committee would be established to investigate the incident. Sanusi expressed condolences to the bereaved families and prayed for the swift recovery of those injured.
He stated, “We must pray for the souls of the deceased and for the strength of their families to bear the loss. May this be the last such tragic incident in our community.” He urged residents to exercise restraint and allow legal processes to unfold, emphasising that violence only leads to further suffering.
Sanusi acknowledged the long-standing complexity of the land dispute, where both the community and the university claim ownership. He stressed the importance of resolving the issue through evidence-based court proceedings and collective dialogue with relevant authorities.
“This matter should not be complicated. If the case is in court, it must be resolved with clear evidence. We must convene with all concerned parties to find a lasting solution,” he said.
The Emir announced plans to form a committee comprising representatives from the state government, university management, security agencies, and community leaders to address the issue. He reaffirmed the need to engage with the governor and BUK authorities to ensure justice is served, reminding residents to accept realities if they have sold their land and received compensation.
Sanusi urged the community to prioritise peace and unity, asserting, “No land or property is worth the loss of human life. The life of one individual is more valuable than the entire world. We must work together to prevent such tragedies from occurring again. Justice will prevail, and Allah is always with those who stand for the truth.”
