Ebonyi State University (EBSU) is set to host its first-ever Alumni Lecture Series, an initiative designed to strengthen alumni engagement and support for the university’s academic and infrastructural development.

The lecture, scheduled for 10 July, has been described as a significant milestone in uniting former students with their alma mater for long-term growth. Dr Paul Okorie, a prominent alumnus and former Commissioner for Works and Environment in Ebonyi State, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that the initiative would inspire greater involvement from alumni in advancing the institution’s mission.

“Alumni bodies play a crucial role in building academic excellence and physical infrastructure in universities. Through scholarships, building projects, and other support, alumni contribute meaningfully to their former institutions,” Okorie said.

He called for the event to become an annual tradition, emphasising the potential it holds for galvanising alumni contributions.

Dr Eugene Otu, a senior lecturer in Political Science at EBSU, echoed these sentiments, noting the strategic role alumni associations play globally. “In some advanced countries, alumni run entire institutions. Here in EBSU, we already benefit from alumni-led projects such as the hospital at the university’s permanent site,” he said.

Highlighting the significance of the upcoming event, Dr Otu praised the choice of Dr Chima Anyaso, a successful entrepreneur and EBSU alumnus, as the keynote speaker. Anyaso, who studied English at EBSU, is now the Chief Executive Officer of the Caades Group, a diversified Nigerian business conglomerate.

“The fact that he studied English yet became a business magnate is an inspiration to our students. His story underscores how education can transform lives,” said Otu.

The lecture, titled “From Classroom to Boardroom: The Power of Education in Shaping Destiny,” is being organised by the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities under the leadership of Professor Nkechi Emma-Echiegu.

Anyaso’s foundations – the Ahuoma Anyaso Education Foundation and the Chima Anyaso Foundation – have empowered hundreds of Nigerians through scholarships and entrepreneurship initiatives. The upcoming lecture will offer a platform for him to share insights on leadership, business, and social impact with students and staff.

The event will also celebrate alumni who have made outstanding contributions to the university and society at large.
