Prof Adekunle Okesina, former Chairman of the National Committee of Provosts of College of Health Sciences, has urged medical practitioners to adopt emerging technologies, particularly local ones, to overcome patient management barriers.
Okesina made this call in Ilorin during his retirement and 70th birthday anniversary celebrations in Ilorin.
He highlighted the importance of cross-fertilising ideas among practitioners as an effective patient management strategy.
As a Chemical Pathologist, Okesina stressed the need for knowledge sharing and expertise exchange in the medical field to drive innovation, improve devices, and achieve research breakthroughs.
Okesina also noted that Artificial Intelligence (AI) adoption among practitioners was crucial in addressing Nigeria’s patient management challenges.
In his lecture, Prof. Simeon Adebisi, Immediate Past Provost of Benue State University’s College of Health Sciences, defined Chemical Pathology as a branch of pathology focused on disease’s biochemical basis.
Adebisi advised Nigerian medical doctors to leverage emerging technologies in patient management, citing the global shift towards multidisciplinary patient care.
“The days of solo doctor-led patient management are over.
“Now, we bring together different specialties to form a team, share knowledge, and provide better interventions,” Adebisi said
In his keynote speech, Prof. John Obafunwa, Director-General of the Nigeria Institute of Medical Research (NIMR), lauded Okesina as a simple, brilliant, and humble individual.
