Gov Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos, on Tuesday, charged corps members to contribute meaningfully to the social-economic development of the state and the entire Nigeria.

Sanwo-Olu gave the charge at the closing ceremony of the orientation course for the 2024 Batch ‘B’ Stream 2 corps members at the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) Orientation Camp, Iyana-Ipaja, Lagos State.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Sanwo-Olu was represented by the state Commissioner for Youth and Social Development, Mr Mobolaji Ogunlende.

The governor noted that the primary purpose of the NYSC scheme was to promote national unity.

“Therefore, strive to live in peace with those around you to achieve the purpose of the scheme,” he said.

He said that the state government would recognise and reward outstanding performances at the end of the service year.

“ The training you received from the orientation course should have a significant impact in your lives during and after national service.

“Wherever you are posted, use it as an opportunity to contribute to societal development, keep in mind where you come from and be dedicated to your service to the nation.

“Endeavour to leave a lasting impression through your work in healthcare, education, community beautification, SDGs initiatives, social services, agriculture and any other field where your service is needed,” he said.

Gov. Seyi Makinde of Oyo State, at the event, advised young Nigerian graduates in the diaspora to create time and come home for national service.

Mankinde, whose daughter is a member of the batch, applauded three camp corps directors for outstanding contributions at the orientation course.

“I encourage our youths in the diaspora: we don’t have another country, when you acquire knowledge, come back home and see what you can do.

“The camp corps directors identified gaps and were able to fill them; that is how to develop a nation, focusing on getting results,” he said.

In her remarks, Mrs Yetunde Baderinwa, Lagos State Coordinator of NYSC, praised the corps members for exhibiting humility and patriotism during the three-week orientation course.

She said that the corps members’ diligence and effective participation in camp activities contributed to the success of the orientation course.

“I am optimistic that they will make significant contributions to the development of Lagos State,” she said.

Baderinwa charged the corps members to report promptly to their places of primary assignment and serve their fatherland with gladness. (NAN)
