The leadership of Northern Christian Youth Professionals (NCYP) has expressed grief over the death of a prominent Ijaw leader, Chief Edwin Clark, describing him as a true nationalist and patriot.
Chairman of NCYP, Mr Isaac Abrak, in a statement issued in Kaduna on Tuesday, said Clark was a fearless advocate for justice and equity.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Clark, a former Federal Commissioner for Information and Leader of Pan Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF), died on Monday at the age of 97.
“With deep sorrow and a profound sense of loss, the Northern Christian Youth Professionals (NCYP) mourns the passing of Chief Edwin Kiagbodo Clark.
“He was a man of great courage and unwavering commitment to the unity and progress of Nigeria.
“As a former Federal Commissioner for Information, he played a pivotal role in shaping the nation’s political landscape, always championing policies and actions that upheld the principles of justice, fairness and national cohesion,” he said.
As the leader of PANDEF, Abrak said that Clark remained a relentless voice for the rights of the people of the oil-producing Niger Delta.
“His tireless advocacy contributed significantly to addressing the challenges of the region, particularly in the fight for resource control, environmental justice and economic empowerment.
“His interventions also played a critical role in curbing oil militancy, ensuring a more peaceful and stable Nigeria.
“Beyond regional concerns, Chief Clark was a true statesman whose boldness in speaking on national issues, especially those touching on the unity and stability of Nigeria, remains a shining legacy worthy of emulation,” he said.
Abrak said the late elder statesman would be fondly remembered for his fearless stance against injustice and his unwavering belief in a prosperous and united Nigeria.
“At a time when Nigeria stands on the threshold of economic greatness, the wisdom and guidance of Chief Edwin Clark will be greatly missed.
“His departure leaves a void in the country’s leadership and advocacy space, but his legacy of selfless service, integrity and patriotism will continue to inspire generations to come.
“The Northern Christian Youth Professionals extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, the people of Niger Delta, PANDEF and the entire nation.
“May his soul rest in perfect peace, and may his contributions to our great nation never be forgotten,” he said. (NAN)
