The Chadian government has reportedly deported more than 600 irregular migrants from Nigeria who were primarily involved in begging and other illegal activities within the country.
Sources indicate that those affected originated from Borno, Kano, Sokoto, and Kaduna States in northern Nigeria. Many of these individuals fled in large numbers during the height of the Boko Haram insurgency, seeking refuge in neighboring countries such as Chad and Cameroon.
Muhammed Barkindo, the Director-General of the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), shared this information with reporters while profiling the refugees in Maiduguri on Monday.
Mr. Barkindo stated that the migrants entered Chad without proper documentation and were largely living in difficult conditions, often resorting to street begging for survival.
He noted that SEMA had provided logistical support and essential supplies, including food and ₦10,000 for transportation, to assist the migrants in their return to their home states.
According to Mr. Barkindo, many of the migrants expressed a strong desire to go back home due to the hardships they faced in Chad.
