The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria (CBCN) has expressed deep sorrow over the death of former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari, offering condolences to President Bola Tinubu, the late president’s family, and citizens across the country.
In a letter dated 14 July 2025, signed by CBCN President Archbishop Lucius Ugorji, the bishops encouraged Nigerians to draw strength from faith during this period of mourning.
“We commiserate with His Excellency, President Bola Tinubu, the family of our late former President, and all Nigerians on this painful loss,” the letter reads. “We entrust his soul to God’s infinite mercy and pray for divine comfort for his loved ones, the government, and the entire nation.”
Describing Buhari’s passing as a moment for national reflection, the bishops emphasised the importance of integrity and selfless leadership. They urged public office holders to use the occasion to recommit themselves to the values of accountability and service to humanity.
“This moment of national mourning should inspire deeper contemplation on the value of life and our shared humanity,” Archbishop Ugorji noted. “May it rekindle our commitment to the common good and righteous leadership.”
The CBCN concluded with a prayer for Nigeria’s unity and progress, appealing for divine guidance for its leaders. “We ask God to grant our nation lasting peace, wisdom in governance, and collective prosperity as we navigate this loss together.”
Buhari, who served as both a military head of state and a two-term elected president, died on 13 July 2025 in London and was buried in his hometown, Daura, Katsina State.
