Tragedy struck the Dankama community in Katsina State on Monday as a building collapse during a heavy downpour claimed the lives of six family members, including a mother and her five children.
The incident occurred around 2:00 AM at the residence of Muhammad Sani Garba Dankama, who was away at the time. The victims—Mariya Sani (45), Mujahid (20), Zahariya (18), Hauwa (15), Amira, and Nura (5)—were asleep when part of the building caved in.
Three others sustained injuries and are receiving treatment in the hospital.
A heartbroken Muhammad Sani expressed grief but also submitted to divine will, saying, “I surrender to Allah’s will. May He grant them eternal rest.”
The Katsina State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), through its Executive Secretary Hajiya Binta Dangani, confirmed the incident, stating that officials have been sent to console the family and assess the structural safety of the area.
The tragedy has left the entire Dankama community in mourning, prompting renewed calls for emergency assessments of buildings to prevent similar disasters.
