The Borno Government on Sunday celebrated Eid el-Kabir with more than 200 street and vulnerable children currently undergoing rehabilitation at the Bulunkutu Rehabilitation Centre in Maiduguri.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the event, organised by the state’s Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development, featured traditional music, dance, games and shared festive meals, aimed at bringing joy and a sense of belonging to the children.

Hajiya Zuwaira Gambo, the Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, led the celebration, joining the children in various activities and reaffirming government’s commitment to the welfare and rehabilitation of vulnerable groups across the state.

She said “these children are not forgotten, they deserve a chance and a better life; today is about mercy, reflection and new beginnings.

“Under the compassionate and visionary leadership of Gov. Babagana Umara Zulum, we remain committed to rescuing, rehabilitating and reintegrating every vulnerable child in Borno.”

According to her, the children, many of whom survivors of Gender-Based Violence (GBV), unaccompanied minors or individuals previously involved in street life or drug abuse, are happy that government has intervened to improve their condition.

She explained that “some shared personal stories of transformation since arriving at the Bulunkutu Centre, provides psychosocial support, education and vocational training as part of the state’s rehabilitation strategy.”

The commissioner noted that the celebration was more than a symbolic gesture, stressing that it reflects the state’s long-term commitment to child protection and social inclusion.

“This administration will continue to prioritise programmes that restore dignity and hope to every child in Borno, regardless of background or circumstances,” she added.(NAN)
