The remains of former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari departed Katsina on Tuesday in a motorcade bound for his hometown of Daura, where he will be laid to rest.
According to the Newsmen, the hearse carrying Buhari’s body left Umaru Musa Yar’adua Airport around 3:15 p.m., accompanied by President Bola Tinubu, service chiefs, current and former governors, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, ministers and leading business figures.
Crowds of residents gathered along the route to pay their final respects to the late leader, described by analysts as one of Nigeria’s most admired politicians in recent memory.
Earlier in the day, an aircraft bearing Buhari’s remains, escorted by Vice-President Kashim Shettima and Chief of Staff to the President Femi Gbajabiamila, landed at Katsina airport at 1:50 p.m. President Tinubu, who had arrived beforehand, formally received the body.
A brief military ceremony took place at the airport before the coffin was transferred to the hearse for the journey to Daura, located approximately 88.6 kilometres from Katsina.
