Former Nigerian military president, General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida, has called for a unified and strategic effort to protect the interests of Northern Nigeria and foster national unity, amidst growing concerns over regional cohesion.
Speaking at his residence in Minna during a courtesy visit by officials of the newly formed Arewa Cohesion for Peace, Unity and Development Initiative, Babangida endorsed the organisation’s objectives and urged its leaders to remain committed to advocating for the North’s advancement within a unified Nigerian state.
According to the former head of state, the current political climate demands “a strong, coordinated voice” that can assertively represent the region’s developmental needs while contributing meaningfully to national stability and peace.
“This organisation has come at a critical time,” Babangida stated. “The North must speak with purpose, not just in defence of its own interests, but in the pursuit of unity and progress for Nigeria as a whole.”
The group is led by former Sokoto State governor, Alhaji Attahiru Dalhatu Bafarawa, who chairs the Board of Trustees, and Dr Abdullahi Idris, who serves as Director General. Babangida expressed confidence in the leadership of the group, describing it as credible and capable of achieving its mission.
Bafarawa, speaking earlier, said the initiative was born from the pressing need to establish a bold voice for the North. He announced that the organisation would be formally launched in Kaduna on 10 July 2025.
Addressing journalists after the meeting, Bafarawa said: “Peace and democratic values, including respect for political opposition, are vital for Nigeria’s survival. No single region should be blamed for the country’s challenges. We must all work collectively to move the nation forward.”
Dr Idris reaffirmed the group’s commitment to promoting peace, progress, and unity in the region, while ensuring that development goals are actively pursued.
