Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar has described the death of former President Muhammadu Buhari as a “national tragedy,” highlighting his legacy of discipline, patriotism, and dedication to Nigeria.
In a tribute shared on his official X account (formerly Twitter) on Sunday, Atiku said:
“His death is not just a loss to his immediate family and the people of Daura, it is a profound national tragedy.
Nigeria has lost a statesman who bore the burdens of leadership in both turbulent and triumphant times and whose legacy will be remembered for generations to come.”
Atiku praised Buhari’s life as one defined by unwavering belief in Nigeria’s sovereignty, adding that he “served with austere conviction and firm belief in duty that marked him as a soldier of principle and a leader of formidable will.”
Offering condolences to Buhari’s family, the people of Katsina State, and the nation, Atiku prayed that “Allah, the Most Merciful, forgive his shortcomings and grant him eternal rest in Aljannah Firdaus.”
Elsewhere, Yobe State Governor Mai Mala Buni expressed his grief through a statement issued by his Director-General Press and Media Affairs, Alhaji Mamman Mohammed. Buni described Buhari as “a nationalist who dedicated his life to the unity and service of his fatherland.”
“As a Military man, he fought for Nigeria’s unity; as a Military Head of State, he committed himself to national service; and as a civilian President, he served with honour and commitment to democracy,” Buni noted.
The governor extended condolences to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the government and people of Katsina State, and the Daura Emirate, praying that Allah grants Buhari eternal peace.
Other tributes came from Sen. Aishatu Binani, who called Buhari “a leader and statesman in the true sense,” and shared how he supported her personally during challenging times. In honour of his memory, Binani announced the suspension of a scheduled political programme in Yola.
Mr Ali Mohammed, Legal Adviser of the APC in Yobe, also remembered Buhari as “an honest leader who will be missed by Nigerians.”
Across social media, Nigerians and international figures continue to mourn the passing of a leader whose life spanned decades of public service.
