Former Nigerian Vice President Atiku Abubakar has formally resigned from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), citing deep concerns over what he describes as a departure from the party’s founding ideals.
In a letter dated 14 July 2025 and addressed to the PDP chairman of Jada 1 Ward, Jada Local Government Area in Adamawa State, Atiku reflected on his decades-long association with the party. He expressed appreciation for the opportunity to serve two terms as Vice President and twice contest for the presidency under the PDP banner.
Describing his decision as “heartbreaking,” Atiku said the party had strayed from the vision that once united its members. “I find it necessary to part ways due to the current trajectory the Party has taken, which I believe diverges from the foundational principles we stood for,” the letter read.
Atiku, who also holds the traditional title of Waziri Adamawa, extended gratitude to the party’s leadership and members for their past support and wished them well in the future.
Local party officials confirmed receipt of the resignation letter on 14 July, marking a significant development in Nigerian politics as the country approaches its next election cycle.
