The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Bayero University, Kano (BUK) Branch, has awarded scholarships to 18 indigent students under its annual Indigent Student Scholarship Scheme.
Speaking at the award ceremony on Tuesday in Kano, ASUU-BUK Chairperson, Dr. Ibrahim Tajo-Siraj, said the initiative is designed to support academically outstanding students facing financial hardship.
He described the scholarship scheme as a core programme of ASUU, implemented at both national and branch levels, to promote inclusive education regardless of socio-economic background, gender, religion, or ethnicity.
“At ASUU, we are not just lecturers, but mentors and builders of society. This scholarship ensures that no student is left behind due to financial constraints,” Tajo-Siraj stated.
According to him, the national ASUU awards ₦200,000 each to two students from each of its over 80 branches annually. In addition, the ASUU-BUK branch awards ₦100,000 each to 16 students, bringing the total number of recipients to 18.
He emphasized that the scholarships are fully funded through voluntary monthly deductions from the salaries of ASUU members.
“Our members are not wealthy, but we believe in the power of collective sacrifice. This initiative has been sustained for over a decade,” he added.
Vice Chancellor of BUK, Prof. Sagir Abbas, represented by Deputy Vice Chancellor (Management Services), Prof. Aliyu Mu’azu, commended ASUU for its commitment to student welfare.
“I congratulate the union for this noble gesture. Initiatives like this are vital, as they address real challenges students face,” he said, urging ASUU to collaborate with the university for broader recognition and publicity.
Convener of the Indigent Scholarship Committee, Prof. Muhammad Waziri, noted that over 100 applications were received this year, reflecting the competitive nature of the award. He expressed hope for increased support in future cycles.
