The Nigerian Army says it is collaborating with academic professionals to enhance its operations and reading culture among its personnel through modern digital library resources.

The Commander, Training and Doctrine Command (TRADOC),
Maj.-Gen. Kevin Aligbe, said this on Wednesday, when he inaugurated the 2024 TRADOC Nigerian Army Library Day Study Period in Minna.

The event, tagged “Enhancing research potentials and reading culture of the Nigerian army personnel through effective use of the library,” was organised by the Directorate of Army Training Support Centre.

The essence, according to Aligbe, is to engage and collaborate with other professionals on contemporary issues on the use and application of library resources.

He said that the library day culminated into one of the major schedules of training activities of TRADOC, Nigerian army for the year.

He said: “It is important to note that
the forum is coming up at a time all efforts are geared towards training, research and innovation, as well as educational development in line with the Chief of Army Staff’s philosophy.

“It is to transform the Nigerian army into a well-trained, equipped and highly effective force to fulfill our constitutional responsibilities in a joint environment.”

The TRADOC commander underscored the need to refresh the minds of all the command’s officers and men on the all-important role of libraries.

He said that despite advancement in technology, a lot of individuals lack proper knowledge on how to use information retrieval skills and computer knowledge in accessing information in modern library.

He, therefore, implored the participants to remain positively focused and attentive to the deliberations in the course of the study period.

Aligbe commended the Chief of Army Staff, Lt.- Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja, for supporting the event financially.

Also, the Director, Army Training Support Centre, TRADOC, Minna, Brig.-Gen. Victor Ita, said that the discussion emanating from the library day would help to establish a befitting modern library for the army in the near future.

A resource person at the programme, Dr Sadiat Salau, spoke on the need for learning and knowledge enhancement for the Nigerian army personnel.

Salau, who is the Head, Multi Media Unit, Federal University of Technology, Minna, said that the military library needed to adapt to the new digital technology, in order to function optimally in the 21st
Century. (NAN)
