Gov Ahmad Aliyu of Sokoto State, has urged institutions, corporate bodies and individuals to support the families of fallen heroes in the country.
Aliyu made the call during the 2025 Armed Forces Remembrance Day Celebration (AFRDC) held in Sokoto on Wednesday.
He noted that the fallen heroes have sacrificed their lives for country’s unity and peaceful coexistence, hence the need to support thier proper up-keeping.
The governor said they deserved to be honoured by the society through sustaining care for the needs of their families on health, education, housing among others.
According to him, such gesture will motivate the present servicemen, assuring that his administration will continue to support the ex-service men.
The governor lauded the security agencies in their efforts to contain the security challenges bedeviling some parts of the country, assuring that his administration would ensure more support towards achieving the desired objectives.
Earlier, Alhaji Aliyu Danchadi, the Chairman of the State Council of Nigerian Legion, said the Armed Forces Remembrance Day was a day set aside to pay tribute to those heroes who paid the supreme price.
Danchadi commended the state government and individuals for their support to the families of fallen heroes as well as the living war veterans.
He said last year, about 400 widows received empowerment training along with business working tools such as; knitting, sewing and grinding machines and hoped to double the number this year.
He observed that donations would go a long way in providing succour to the families of fallen heroes and ex-service men and their dependants.
Leader of Fallen Heroes Wives Association, Malama Maryam Yusuf, appealed for more commitment from the authorities, noting that many of them were currently homeless, who lacked clothing with no proper children education.
“We need houses, businesses and scholarships in order to live a life worthy of living, this will certainly reduce the pains of loosing our bread winners,” Yusuf said.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the event featured military parade, symbolic release of pigeons and placement of wreaths for peace in honour of the fallen heroes. (NAN)
