Dr Bala Muhammed, Director and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Life Stock Management Service (LMS) has called on Nigerians to accord all living beings compassion, respect and justice.
Muhammed made the call in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja in commemoration of the International Animal Rights Day celebrated every December 10.
He said the essence of humane treatment and handling of animals lay “in our ethical responsibility as stewards of the planet.”
He identified animals as sentient beings capable of experiencing pain, joy, and suffering.
“By treating them humanely, we acknowledge their rights to live free from harm, exploitation, and neglect.
“This not only fosters a more compassionate society but promotes biodiversity and ecological balance, as all living beings play a crucial role in our ecosystem.
“Let us reflect on our relationship with animals and commit to making positive changes in our actions and attitudes towards them.
“Together, we can build a future where animal rights are recognised and upheld,” he said.
Muhammed said that the day was set aside to recognise the intrinsic value of animals and to advocate for their rights, ensuring they are treated with dignity and kindness.
NAN reports that the International Animal Rights Day is commemorated annually on December 10 and the theme for 2024 is “The world is their Home too.”
The CEO of LMS said the theme emphasised the importance of advocacy and education in promoting animal rights.
He said it also encouraged individuals and communities to raise awareness about the plight of animals and to support initiatives that protect their welfare.
“By coming together to share knowledge and inspire action, we can create a world where animals are no longer seen as commodities but as companions deserving of respect and care,” Muhammed said. (NAN)
