The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has declared a three-day national mourning period to pay tribute to the legacy of Nigeria’s former president, Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away on Sunday in London.
In a statement released on Monday in Kano, the party’s Interim National Chairman, Senator David Mark, announced that all political activities at both national and state levels would be suspended during this time of mourning.
Mark highlighted Buhari’s lifelong dedication to the nation, describing him as a leader whose service in both military and civilian roles left an indelible mark on Nigeria’s history.
“President Muhammadu Buhari was a statesman of remarkable integrity. As a soldier, he defended the unity and sovereignty of our country with courage. Later, as a democratically elected president, he played a pivotal role in strengthening Nigeria’s democratic institutions,” Mark said.
He further urged the Federal Government to take meaningful steps to immortalise Buhari, suggesting the creation of monuments, institutions, or national initiatives that reflect the late president’s values and contributions.
“ADC extends heartfelt condolences to the Buhari family, the Government of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, and all citizens mourning this loss,” Mark concluded, calling on party members nationwide to observe the mourning period with respect and solemnity.
