Ikoyi Club 1938 Golf Section has unveiled plans for the 2024 edition of Nigeria Cup,a golf tournament organised annually to celebrate Nigeria’s independence anniversary.
Unveiling the plans at a news conference in Lagos on Wednesday, Mr Tunde Oni, Vice Captain of the club, said the tournament,packaged by Ikoyi Golf Community Nigeria Association(IGCNA),would begin with the children’s tourney on Sept.21.
“On Sept. 22, it will be the turn of Golf for Good and on Sept 23, the Caddies would have their turn on the field.
“Activities on Sept. 24 will be centered on having the ladies tournament, while on Sept.25, there will be Independence day kitty”,he said.
He said the professional tournament would be held on Sept.26.
“On Sept. 27, we shall have Sponsors’ tournament and round off on Sept. 28 with Nigeria Cup tournament and gala night,” he said.
Oni said the tournament would allow access to the less privileged across communities in the country.
“We are having the tournament because we want to reach out especially with the Caddies who are also part of golf playing.
“We need the support of the Caddies and so, we also want to reciprocate by supporting them.
“The tournament will give the Caddies the necessary exposure and also we are glad to welcome the professionals because they are the mainstay of the game,” he said.
The Chairman of Ikoyi Club 1938, Tafa Zibiri Aliu commended the Local Organizing Committee (LOC) and the golf section for keeping to the mission of the club.
According to him ,the 2024 Nigeria Club shows what the club believes in and stands for.
“Our slogan at Ikoyi Club 1938 is creating global harmony through recreation, so the process is to support thousands of families.
“We also want to thank our sponsors like First E&P an energy company, Alternative Bank, a subsidiary of Sterling Bank, Nigerian Breweries, Nestle, United Airlines ,among others.
“We hope to have a wonderful tournament and happy independence celebration,” he said.
The LOC chairman, 2024 Nigeria Cup, George Etomi, said that no fewer than 30 professional golfers would participate in the tournament.
He said winner of the tournament would go home with N1 million while the second would have N750,000 and the third , N500,000.
“The highlight of the grand finale will be a dinner at the golf range and it will be a dinner like no other that will be interactive with the all the members of the golf section,” he said.
One of the sponsors, United Airlines represented by the Country Sales Manager, Oluwatomi Bola-Sadipe, said that the group was excited to partner with the organisers of the competition. (NAN)
