The Lagos State Parking Authority (LASPA) has offered a six-month grace period for businesses to address parking shortfall.

The General Manager of LASPA, Mrs Adebisi Adelabu, gave the grace when the authority met with representatives of the Restaurant, Cafe, Bar and Club (RCBC) Association on Monday in Lagos.

Adelabu noted that the meeting was to address concerns regarding the Lagos State Parking Policy’s impact on the hospitality sector.

She decried the inadequate parking infrastructure of some hospitality businesses who had failed to comply with building regulations by not including sufficient parking for customers.

Adelabu reassured attendees of the government’s commitment to the policy, which aimed to tackle indiscriminate parking and ease traffic congestion in the state.

On concerns about overlapping jurisdictions and local government interference, she explained that the state government had established a strategic partnership with local governments and local council development areas to ensure no additional disturbances over parking levies.

“Business owners are advised to consult with LASPA before allowing customer parking on roads, which can obstruct traffic.

“We acknowledging the challenges faced by businesses. There is need for the hospitality sector to communicate their specific needs so that LASPA can provide appropriate guidance and recommend nearby parking options.

“It is essential to balance business interests with the rights of the general public.

“The Authority has provided ample time and opportunities for businesses to adapt. Being mindful of prevailing circumstances, it has also made provisions for suitable payment plans for those who comply,” she said.

Adelabu urged all Lagosians to support the state government’s parking regulation efforts and participate in the regulated on-street parking scheme.

“ Compliance with the policy is vital for reducing traffic congestion and improving parking efficiency.

“By paying the required parking levies and engaging with the system, you help create a more organised and accessible urban environment,” she said.

Responding, RCBC President, Mrs Morenike George-Taylor expressed gratitude for the general manager’s proactive engagement and confirmed that many members were already compliant.

She also noted that the hospitality sector was ready to support and adapt to the new parking scheme.

Also present at the meeting was Director of Government Relations and Advocacy, Tokunbo Sotinwa. (NAN)
