A Non-political group, Edo Salvation Group (ESG), says it is worried by plans by Sen. Monday Okpebholo, to yank teachers off the new minimum wage if he becomes Edo governor.
Okpebholo is the candidate of All Progressives Congress (APC) in the upcoming governorship election.
Speaking at a campaign rally in Auchi on Monday, Okpebholo disclosed his plan to discard the salary structure being implemented by Gov. Godwin Obaseki administration.
Reacting swiftly to the statement, the group’s National Coordinator, Mr Imman Ekpe, in a statement in Abuja on Monday said the plan was not in the interest of teachers.
Ekpe said that teachers in Edo have been enjoying the N70, 000 minimum wage since May 2024, after it was introduced by Gov. Godwin Obaseki
He wondered why the APC candidate planned to turn back the hand of the clock.
Ekpe quoted Okpebholo as saying that: “We are going to ensure that we pay them (teachers) according to the law of the Federal Government of Nigeria, not Obaseki’s way of paying teachers.”
Ekpe said it was shocked that such a statement came from someone who was aspiring to lead the state.
“However, whether he missed his script on education is now lost on us given his promise to abandon the new salary package for workers and teachers in state.
“We are again calling on him to prepare to defend this proposal at the forthcoming debate for governorship candidates,” Ekpe said. (NAN)
