There was pandemonium on the Ibadan -Ife Expressway at the weekend when an inferno resulted from a petrol-laden tanker.
Our correspondent gathered that at least four vehicles were reportedly burnt while some people sustained varying degrees of injuries as a petrol-laden tanker went up in flames.
The incident occurred at the Ajia circular road end in Egbeda Local Government Area of Oyo State, causing traffic gridlock that stranded motorists and commuters for several hours.
The affected vehicles were a petrol-loaded truck, an 18-passenger bus, a mid-sized truck, and a Micra taxi.
According to the State Fire Services General Manager, Mr Yemi Akinyinka, the fire started at approximately 5:45 p.m., damaged property, and displaced several families.
He said motorists and commuters were stranded for several hours as operatives of the Federal Fire Service and security agencies tried to put the situation under control.
According to eyewitnesses, the truck lost control while trying to ascend a hill at the Circular Road junction in Egbeda Local Government Area of Oyo State.
According to a statement by the General Manager of the Oyo State Fire Service, Yemi Akinyinka, the affected vehicles were a petrol-laden truck, an 18-passenger bus, another mid-size truck, and a Micra taxi.
“Preliminary investigations suggest that the fire was caused by some residents trying to use the leakage opportunity for their beneficiary’s use.
“Four vehicles were destroyed, one petroleum truck,18-passenger bus, one small truck, and one micra were all affected. Some people suffered minor injuries,” Akinyinka said.
