No fewer than 250 babies are delivered monthly, and about 14,000 yearly at Obio Cottage Hospital in Port Harcourt, an official has said.

Dr Akinwunmi Fajola, Health Manager at Renaissance Africa Energy Company Limited, disclosed this to journalists on Monday.

He explained that Obio Cottage Hospital, funded by Renaissance Energy and its Joint Venture (JV) partners, was established as part of a broader strategy to offer affordable healthcare to the poor.

According to Fajola, the hospital, established in 2010 in collaboration with the Rivers State Government, provides maternal, neonatal, child, primary and general medical care under the Community Health Insurance Scheme (CHIS).

“Through the CHIS scheme, Obio Cottage Hospital has grown significantly over the years, meeting the health needs of thousands of low-income Nigerians at subsidised rates.

“So far, we record over 250 baby deliveries monthly, and about 14,000 annually – with over 400,000 people having benefitted from the CHIS programme, the highest figure in the Niger Delta region,” he said.

Fajola said that the hospital had recently inaugurated a state-of-the art Electronic Medical Records (EMR) system as part of plans to enhance healthcare efficiency and patient-centred service delivery.

He further stated that the hospital had achieved notable success in preventing mother-to-child transmission of HIV.

“We are pleased to report that 99 per cent of babies have been successfully protected from contracting HIV from their mothers.

“There parents have HIV, yet they are born without the virus,” he added.

He commended the state government, the company’s partners, and the hospital staff for their commitment in delivering quality healthcare services to the people.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Renaissance Energy JV has plans to upgrade and expand the hospital further, in line with its corporate social responsibility initiative aimed at benefitting more patients.
