Authorities in Nigeria’s Edo State are pursuing multiple suspects following the fatal shooting of a police officer assigned to protect an expatriate during a cash-related movement in Benin City.
Sergeant Aminu Yusuf was gunned down on 16 July by a group of armed assailants while accompanying the expatriate’s vehicle along First East Circular Road, shortly after a withdrawal from a local bank.
Confirming the incident, Police Public Relations Officer CSP Moses Yamu stated that two individuals have already been taken into custody, while efforts are underway to locate the remaining suspects.
According to local sources, the four attackers ambushed the convoy, opened fire, and made away with the officer’s AK-47 rifle after inflicting fatal injuries. Sgt Yusuf was rushed to a nearby hospital but was declared dead on arrival.
Police say tracking the stolen weapon and arresting those still at large remains a top priority.
The incident has sparked concern among residents and stakeholders about the rising risks faced by both expatriates and law enforcement personnel in Nigeria’s volatile urban centres.
