Police in Nigeria’s Kano State have set up an eight-member committee to investigate the recent violent confrontation between supporters of the 15th Emir of Kano, Aminu Ado Bayero, and those backing the 16th Emir, Muhammadu Sanusi II.
The clash, which took place last Sunday at the palace of Emir Sanusi in Kofar Kudu, left several people injured and resulted in damage to property, including police vehicles.
Commissioner of Police Ibrahim Bakori announced the formation of the committee on Wednesday during a meeting with the newly elected executives of the Kano State Correspondents’ Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), who paid him a courtesy visit at his office.
Bakori explained that the committee had been inaugurated on Monday and is expected to present its findings within seven days.
Addressing the journalists, CP Bakori pledged to strengthen cooperation with the press to advance community policing and public safety in the state.
Earlier, Mr Murtala Adewale, Chairman of the Kano Correspondents’ Chapel, said the visit aimed to reinforce the cordial relationship that already exists between the media and the police.
