Former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari is currently receiving medical treatment in the United Kingdom, his media aide Garba Shehu has confirmed.
In a statement responding to media inquiries, Shehu explained that Buhari had initially travelled for his routine annual medical check-up but fell ill while abroad. He assured the public that the former leader is “recovering steadily” and responding positively to treatment.
“It is true that the former President, Muhammadu Buhari, is unwell. He has been receiving treatment in the UK,” Shehu said. “You would recall he made it known that he was going for his annual medical check-up. He became ill there, but I am happy to announce to you that he is doing well in his recovery. We pray for his healthy recovery.”
The specific details of Buhari’s illness were not disclosed. However, the confirmation brings an end to days of speculation over his health, following reports of his extended stay overseas.
Buhari, who stepped down in May 2023 after completing two terms in office, had previously undertaken several medical trips to the UK during his presidency, sometimes remaining there for prolonged periods.
Shehu did not provide details on when the former President is expected to return to Nigeria.
