The government of Kano State has declared Thursday, 26 June 2025, a public holiday in observance of the Islamic New Year, 1447 AH.
The announcement was made in a statement signed by Comrade Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya, the state’s Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs.
Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf congratulated the Muslim community across the state on the arrival of the new year, which begins with the Islamic month of Muharram.
He called on the people of Kano, particularly Muslims, to use the occasion for reflection, spiritual renewal, and prayers for continued peace and prosperity in the state and Nigeria as a whole.
Governor Yusuf also urged residents to embrace unity and contribute positively towards fostering harmony in the country, especially in challenging times.
The Islamic lunar calendar, which begins with the Hijrah—the Prophet Muhammad’s migration from Mecca to Medina—is observed globally by Muslims, and Kano has a long-standing tradition of marking the New Year with prayers and reflection.
