Nigeria’s Super Falcons delivered a commanding performance in a goalless draw against Portugal on Monday, with goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie earning accolades for a series of spectacular saves that underlined her status as Africa’s finest.

Despite arriving in Lisbon less than a day before the match, the nine-time African champions showed no signs of travel fatigue, displaying defensive discipline and attacking intent against a strong Portuguese side at the Estádio José Gomes.

Portugal nearly capitalised on an early mistake in the 6th minute when Christy Ucheibe’s misplaced pass allowed Diana Silva a clear chance, only for the forward to miss the target.

Nigeria responded with swift counter-attacks, including a sharp move by Francisca Ordega that set up Rasheedat Ajibade, whose clever effort was parried by goalkeeper Ines Pereira.

Nnadozie was soon called into action, making a string of saves in the first half and producing a stunning triple-stop early in the second half to deny Silva, Carole Costa and Andreia Norton in quick succession.

The Falcons came alive in the latter stages, with substitutes Ifeoma Onumonu, Ashleigh Plumptre and Halimatu Ayinde injecting pace and creativity into the midfield.

Ordega rattled the crossbar in the 75th minute, and Onumonu came close to snatching a winner after another dazzling Ordega assist.

The Nigerians left the pitch to warm applause from the home fans, who were impressed by the team’s resilience, flair and composure under pressure.

Randy Waldrum’s side now travel to Morocco, where they will face the Black Queens of Ghana in a friendly fixture on Sunday in Casablanca, ahead of their Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) opener against Tunisia on July 6.
