Students from St. John Vianney Science College in Ukwulu, Anambra State, have emerged victorious at the first-ever UK-Nigeria Virtual Debate Championship, showcasing Nigeria’s academic prowess on a global platform.

The championship, held on Thursday, was organised by Bring-It-On Africa in collaboration with Debate Mate UK, aiming to foster cross-cultural understanding while enhancing students’ critical thinking, oratory, and reasoning skills.

The Nigerian delegation comprised students from Britarch Schools, Sure Start School (Abuja), St. Augustine’s College (Jos), and St. John Vianney Science College. Representing the United Kingdom were Central Foundation Girls’ School, Maghull High School, and Shireland High School.

St. John Vianney Science College stood out among its peers, claiming the top spot after a series of keenly contested virtual debates.

In a congratulatory message on Saturday, the wife of Anambra State Governor, Dr Nonye Soludo, praised the students for their outstanding performance, describing it as a reflection of the state’s enduring commitment to educational excellence.

“Our students have once again proven that education is at the heart of Anambra’s development vision,” said Soludo, who also leads the state’s Healthy Living Initiative. “The success of St. John Vianney Science College reaffirms that we are nurturing a generation of leaders and innovators.”

She also commended the school’s management and staff for preparing the students to compete at such a high level.

The winning team from Anambra included Chibueze Jennifer, Catherine Obiokafor, Benjamin Eneoli, and Valentine Onwuegbusi, under the guidance of their coach, Mr John Onuigbo.
