The Governor of Kebbi State, Nasir Idris, has significantly increased monthly funding for four state-owned tertiary institutions as part of a broader initiative to strengthen higher education in the region.

In a statement released on Wednesday by the Commissioner for Higher Education, Isah Abubakar-Tunga, the state government confirmed that monthly allocations have been raised from ₦10.5 million to ₦40 million.

“This is in line with Governor Idris’s commitment to revitalising the higher education sector and providing adequate financial backing for academic development,” Abubakar-Tunga said.

The affected institutions include Adamu Augie College of Education, Argungu (formerly receiving ₦2 million), the College of Health Science and Technology, Jega (₦1.5 million), the College of Advanced and Legal Studies, Yauri (₦5 million), and Kebbi State Polytechnic, Dakingari (₦2 million).

In addition to the monthly allocation boost, the governor has approved a further ₦35.7 million to support the regularisation of 556 students from the College of Health Science and Technology, Jega. These students, from departments such as Community Health and Environmental Health, were previously unindexed for the 2023/2024 academic year.

Furthermore, an additional ₦59.7 million has been released for the accreditation of seven programmes offered by the same college under the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE).

Altogether, the governor’s latest education funding approvals total ₦135.5 million.

Commissioner Abubakar-Tunga affirmed that these efforts demonstrate the administration’s “unwavering dedication to using education as the foundation for societal renewal and progress.”
