Former Nigerian Senate President, David Mark, has strongly condemned the ongoing wave of killings in Benue State, describing the situation as “tragic, senseless, and unacceptable.”
In a statement issued by his media adviser, Paul Mumeh, on Monday, Mark expressed grave concern over what he termed the deteriorating security climate in his home state and urged the Federal Government to act swiftly and decisively to restore order.
“The primary obligation of any government is the protection and welfare of its people,” Mark said. “This is the unfortunate reality the Benue people are confronted with. Government must rise to its responsibility.”
He called on the Federal Government to fulfil its constitutional duty to safeguard citizens’ lives and property, while also appealing to Governor Hyacinth Alia to step up state-level initiatives to protect residents.
Mark also encouraged traditional rulers, community leaders, and local stakeholders to work closely with law enforcement and intelligence agencies to help identify and prosecute those responsible for the violence.
In a message of hope and resilience, he urged citizens to remain united in the face of adversity. “This is a trying moment for our people. We must unite, mobilise, and speak with one voice against the invaders. We must refuse to bow to fear.”
He called on the people of Benue to remain peaceful, uphold unity, and maintain the cultural values of looking out for one another.
