President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has paid warm tribute to Nigeria’s former Head of State, General Abdulsalami Abubakar (Retired), as he marked his 83rd birthday on Sunday, praising his enduring legacy of peace and democratic leadership.
In a personally written statement, President Tinubu highlighted General Abubakar’s crucial role in Nigeria’s history, especially his leadership during the country’s return to civilian governance in 1999.
“General Abubakar’s statesmanship and his decision to facilitate a peaceful democratic transition remain a defining moment in our national journey,” Tinubu said. “His courageous act of handing over power laid the foundation for Nigeria’s Fourth Republic and cemented the principle of democratic rule.”
The President further applauded Abubakar’s continued service to the nation, especially in his capacity as Chairman of the National Peace Committee, where he has helped mediate political tensions and support credible elections.
“He continues to be a voice of reason and moderation, guiding the nation through periods of uncertainty with wisdom and integrity,” Tinubu added.
Describing him as a “patriot of rare integrity,” President Tinubu said Nigeria owes much to General Abubakar’s selfless contributions. He extended wishes for continued health, strength, and divine grace to the former leader.
