Niger State Deputy Governor Comrade Yakubu Garba has disclosed that close to 1000 people were still missing and 200 bodies were buried as at last count following the flood in Mokwa Local government area of the state.
He disclosed this yesterday while receiving the Presidential candidate of Labour Party in 2023 election Peter Obi who paid a sympathy visit at Government House Minna
Comrade Garba who described the incident as National Catastrophy said,
It is not only lives lost that we’re lost , infrastructure and other amenities were lost as a result of the flood, ,
” It is a shocking incident in the country, National and international assistance is needed, Issues of flood has been recurring also in Mashegu, Rafi the same thing, the wet season just began we have lost 200 lives, 1000 missing and over 3 000 displaced, we afraid when the rain comes between and August” he said
He said the state government would continue to take proactive measures by sensitizing the people but added that the nation should, pray the state and that the country should not witness this kind of incident again.
Peter Obi had earlier announced a donation of N20,000 to mitigate the effects of the flood on the people while saying that he was touched by the devastating effects of the flood
“I am singularly here to Commiserate with you , whatever happened we are Nigerians , Niger state can change Nigeria, we shouldn’t be poor , whatever happened in Niger state affect Nigeria, we are here to pay condolences , may God almighty who allowed that, grant those who died eternal life” he said
