The Enugu State House of Assembly has passed the International Conference Centre (ICC) Management Corporation Bill.
The bill was passed on Tuesday in Enugu during the plenary.
It seeks to engage an independent body to manage the centre newly completed by Gov. Peter Mbah of Enugu State.
In his lead debate, the Minority Leader of the assembly, Mr Iloabuchi Aniagu said the bill would ensure the improvement of the structure as well as its maintenance and rehabilitation when needed.
He said it would ensure that the state government generated expected revenue by attracting businesses to the centre.
Aniagu commended the executive arm of the government for taking the ICC away from the ministry.
He argued that government bureaucracy would make the place unfunctional if left under the control of the ministry.
Contributing, Mr Osita Eze, representing Oji River Constituency, while supporting the bill, regretted that bureaucracy had denied the government the opportunity to generate revenue from its investments.
He said that with the bill, government could employ qualified persons from private, public and religious sectors to manage the centre.
He said that the bill was timely and in line with Gov. Mba’s plan to transform the state.
Mr Lebechi Eze, (Isi-Uzo), said the bill put to rest the fear of mismanaging the edifice and ensuring it did not go moribund.
He said that the centre would help attract tourists and potential investors to the state.
The Speaker, Chief Uche Ugwu, commended the state government for ensuring the completion of the centre.
Ugwu charged those that would be appointed into the corporation to discharge their responsibilities efficiently and without fear or favour to ensure the structure stood the test of time. (NAN)
