China has expressed worry about the situation in the Gaza Strip after Israel unleashed massive airstrikes against Hamas militants overnight.
China said it is “extremely concerned” and hopes all sides support the effective implementation of the ceasefire, said Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning in Beijing on Tuesday.
She said the parties should avoid actions that could escalate the situation and prevent a larger-scale humanitarian catastrophe, she said.
About two months after the fragile ceasefire began in the Gaza Strip, Israel’s military resumed massive attacks on Hamas throughout the coastal strip in the early hours of Tuesday.
Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi has emphasised that the Gaza Strip belongs to the Palestinians.
A violent change in this status would only bring “new chaos,” he said earlier this month.(dpa/NAN)
