An Assistant Comptroller, Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Clement Amaweh, has underscored the importance of verifying the national identity of cross-border workers to reduce the crime rate across the country.
Amaweh, the officer-in-charge of Ohumbe Outstation, Yewa North, made this known in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Tuesday in Ota, Ogun.
According to him, it is necessary to verify the national identity of cross-border workers to stop the incessant cases of insecurity in the country.
“This will reduce the risk of cross-border criminals taking advantage of employment opportunities to perpetuate crime,” he said.
Amaweh attributed some of the crimes committed across the country to those who hid under the disguise of cross-border workers seeking employment opportunities in Nigeria.
He said that emerging security imperatives across national borders had increased the focus and concerns on Cross-Border Trade (CBT).
According to the assistant comptroller, the porous border is a major challenge as it affects CBT significantly by facilitating smuggling and undermining legitimate trade. (NAN)
